Faro City is located just inland of the natural park of Ria Formosa and separates the central to the east of the Algarve. With a population of 64,560 inhabitants and an area of approx. 202km2. It is the capital of the Algarve and pleasantly busy all year round.

A 30,000-seat stadium Estádio Algarve, shared by the cities of Faro and Loulé, was one of the venues of the Euro 2004 football championship and is also the temporary home ground of the Gibraltar national football team. Louletano Desportos Clube (a club from the city of Loulé) and Sporting Clube Farense (from Faro) also use smaller municipal stadiums.
